I actually came across this video earlier this week on Twitter, but I think I've watched/listened to it over a dozen times since then. If you need a kick in the pants for some motivation, give it a watch. The combination of Explosions in The Sky providing the music with Eric "The Hip Hop Preacher" talking can make anyone want to go out and change the world. Enjoy.

Tue, 30 Aug 2011 07:44:00 -0700 We're going streaking! http://evanjohnston.com/were-going-streaking http://evanjohnston.com/were-going-streaking

100 Days and Counting

This post is a bit delayed but hey, I've been busy. A little over 100 days ago, I started running every day. Motivated by someone that people like to refer to as The Beer Runner, I saw what he was doing and the goal that he set out to accomplish and thought "I could do that". The basis is simple, run at least 1 mile and enjoy a tasty brew every day. Sounds easy enough, right?

Well, maybe not so easy. The beer a day thing wasn't really a problem since I keep the fridge at my house fairly well stocked with tasty craft beer and I'm fortunate to have a workplace that does as well. But it became apparent pretty early on that life and work like to get in the way of running. I love what I do for a living, but when what I do means the occasional tight deadlines and the long days and sometimes nights that accompany it, the last thing on your mind at those times can be getting your run in. I decided a little sleep deprivation wasn't going get in the way and pushed on.

The other obstacle that I faced was golf. Now that may sound like an odd thing, but I'm slightly obsessed with the game and often play in local and national qualifiers which can mean walking 36 holes in a day. Now that may not seem like that big a deal to some, but I ask you to walk 36 holes in a day while carrying your own bag and then let me know if you feel like doing much afterwards. I'm pretty sure that you'll just want to sit down and take care of the other half of the streak, a nice cold brew.

I wish I had run today...

With that being said, the streak has definitely gotten easier to maintain as time has gone on. The running is now a pretty engrained part of my morning routine during the week. Whenever I don't feel like running, I just remind myself of the following quote:

There will always be days when you didn't run where you'll think, "I wish I had run today", but there will never be a day where you went running where you'll think "I wish I hadn't done that".

Through all of this running, I have defnitely noticed that my energy has increased and I'm pretty sure I'm in close to the best shape I've been in since college (Soccer FTW!). Not only that, but I think that the running has helped my golf game as well. How you might ask? Talk to any athlete out there and they'll tell you that it is much easier to concentrate and focus when you aren't tired. Golf is mostly mental, and I know that it helps that I feel like I have just as much energy walking up the 18th fairway as I did the first.

So there it is, it's been 105 days now and I hope that this is only a small portion of a longer streak. If you've been thinking about getting in better shape or just getting back to excercising again, NIKE (Just Do It). I am here to let you know that it is possible to be healthy and active and still enjoy a tasty brew.

Slainte!

P.S. I've been working on a little project. A glimpse at what it might be can be found here.

Thu, 16 Jun 2011 19:03:00 -0700 Hi, my name is Evan, and I've been a beer-runner for 1 month http://evanjohnston.com/hi-my-name-is-evan-and-ive-been-a-beer-runner http://evanjohnston.com/hi-my-name-is-evan-and-ive-been-a-beer-runner

So a little while back I read a tweet from Draft Magazine talking about this guy that was doing something he called a "beer-run" streak. The premise is pretty simple, run at least 1 mile and drink 1 craft beer each day. I figured that I had the craft beer a day part down (you can follow me on Untappd to see), so I just needed to add in the running part. 30 days ago I started a streak of my own.

It did help that I was already pretty active, working out 3 days a week, and that running comes fairly easilty to me having played soccer in college. Now the challenge was just getting in at least 1 mile everday. For me, this means running in the morning before heading off to work and going about my daily activities (a.k.a. golfing). I've never really been a morning person, but I was already getting up and going to the gym a couple days a week, so getting up earlier those other few mornings wasn't too hard to do.

After running every day for the last month, it is definitely getting easier and the motivation to continue is now stronger having already made it this long. My advice to anyone thinking about a streak of their own is the same recommendation for those getting into craft beer, start slow. My routes at the beginninng weren't very long and my pace definitely wasn't that fast, but both have gotten better just as my initial foray into craft beer started with Boulevard Wheat and has moved onto Imperial IPA's and Stout's

I raise my glass to all of the beer runners out there and hope to inspire more to start their own streak and show everyone that it is possible to enjoy good beer and live an active lifestyle at the same time. Slainte!

Wed, 09 Mar 2011 19:15:00 -0800 It Sucks That People Think Nebraska Sucks http://evanjohnston.com/it-sucks-that-people-think-nebraska-sucks http://evanjohnston.com/it-sucks-that-people-think-nebraska-sucks

Nebraska Sucks

Okay, it doesn't, but that tends to be the national perception that is floating around. Don't just take my word for it, you should watch this keynote from the Nebraska Summit on Entreprenuership by the guys from Archrival and listen to what they have to say.

Why I Live in Omaha

To take the phrase from the site that the individuals at What Cheer created, I live in Omaha because... I can't quite fit it into the number of characters that the site provides, so here goes:

  • I have a job here that is just as good if not better than any I could find anywhere in the United States
  • I can afford to play golf both days every weekend for under $30 a round (walking) at great public courses
  • I was able to buy my own house at the tender age of 24, and a nice house in a historic neighborhood with almost 2k square ft at that, with a salary under 50k a year (at the time)

And that's just a couple bullet points that are easy to type out.

Jokes

Whenever I meet people on my occasional travels for work, or those I meet on the golf course, the topic of 'why Omaha' always seems to come up. I usually give a somewhat joking answer that 'Omaha is a great place to live, but not necessarily to visit on vacation'. I'm a man of few words, so giving specific details as to why I live here on the spot is a little difficult. When the conversation continues, it usually boils down to the following:

  • I can do the work I want here, and do it with a really good work-life balance (work hard, play hard)
  • We're in the middle of the country, if I really want to vacation to either coast or visit a warmer climate, it's possible
  • It's really affordable
  • There really is a lot going on in Omaha (As an example: http://omahype.com/)

Inspiration

After watching the aforementioned keynote from the guys at Archrival this evening, it got me to thinking about why I live where and do and why it really is a great place to live and work. We have all traveled and we all know what kind of reactions we get when we say what we do and where we do it. The answer to fixing the issue that Nebraska is just a 'fly over' state is not a simple one, but I think we have the brains and people to change that stigma. Let's do this!

American Dietetic Association Confirms Health Benefits of Beer

By Andrea Giancoli | February 28, 2011 | 0 Comments

While red wine is often touted as the heart-healthy libation, more evidence is showing beer has a great deal of nutrition and health-promoting qualities as well, according to an article published in the Winter 2011 issue of the American Dietetic Association’s member publication, ADA Times.

“Red wine enjoys a reputation for sophistication and health benefits, but as interest in artisan brewing gains momentum and emerging research reveals unique nutrition properties, beer is finding redemption not only as a classy libation with deep roots in many cultures, but as a beverage with benefits,” writes registered dietitian and ADA Spokesperson Andrea Giancoli.

February is American Heart Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness of the leading cause of death in the U.S. – cardiovascular disease. One in three adults has some form of heart/cardiovascular disease. Many of these deaths and risk factors are preventable and food choices have a big impact on your heart's health, even if you have other risk factors.

Moderate consumption of any alcoholic beverage, including beer, has been shown to increase HDL cholesterol, lower LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of blood clotting, Giancoli writes in ADA Times. Moderate alcohol consumption has also been associated with a lower incidence of gallstones, decreased risk of type 2 diabetes and improved cognitive function in older adults.

“Beer specifically has been associated with additional health outcomes, including lowering the risk of kidney stones in men compared to other alcoholic beverages, possibly due to its high water content and diuretic effect,” Giancoli writes. “Compounds in hops may also slow the release of calcium from bone that is implicated in kidney stones. Additionally, beer drinkers seem to have a more protective effect towards greater bone mineral density due to the high content of silicone in beer.”

Like wine, beer is fat free. Carbohydrates, which make up about one-third of the calories in beer, mostly come from partially broken down starch. Protein, which is nearly non-existent in wine, is present in small amounts in beer – about 4 percent of the total calories.

Most beers are between 3 percent and 6 percent alcohol by volume, although some beers can contain as much as 10 percent alcohol, “and some are much higher.” Giancoli writes. “Wines are between 12 percent and 14 percent ABV. Because the average beer has a lower ABV and more than two and half times as much water, it contributes to fluid intake more so than wine.”

It’s a common myth that, the darker the beer, the higher the alcohol content, Giancoli writes. “In fact, what affects a beer’s color is whether dark malts are used, and alcohol depends on the amount of sugar in the wort.”

Although the USDA Nutrient Database lists beer’s fiber content as zero grams recent studies have shown lager contains up to 2 grams of soluble fiber per liter, while dark beers can contain up to 3.5 grams. “Although wine and beer are neck-and-neck when it comes to mineral composition, each providing some potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and fluoride (the latter presumably contributed through the water source), beer is the winner when it comes to selenium and silicon,” Giancoli writes.

“While nutrient analyses refer to an average ‘regular beer,’ there are more than 100 different categories of beer – and the brewing process, ingredients and proportions used can influence the nutritional content of each.”

“Whether you’re exploring the cultural roots of an ancient beverage, expanding your culinary prowess, supporting a local brewer or just enjoying a cold one,” says Giancoli, “remember that moderate consumption means one 12-ounce beer per day for women and two for men.”

Mon, 21 Feb 2011 11:45:00 -0800 Microsoft confirms Kinect Windows SDK, due in Spring | WinRumors http://evanjohnston.com/microsoft-confirms-kinect-windows-sdk-due-in http://evanjohnston.com/microsoft-confirms-kinect-windows-sdk-due-in

Microsoft said on Monday that it is planning to roll out an official Kinect SDK in Spring.

WinRumors previously exclusively revealed that the software giant was planning its own SDK amid a growing community of “Kinect hackers”. Microsoft officials confirmed the existence of the Windows based Kinect SDK during a special press event on Monday. Microsoft’s Don Mattrick, president of the company’s interactive business division said the software maker will ship the SDK in the Spring.

Microsoft has shipped over 8 million Kinect sensors in just 60 days on the market. Microsoft’s Kinect sensor has been a phenomenal success story for the company. The console accessory sold out across a number of retailers during the recent festive season and Microsoft smashed its own estimates of 5 million units in 2010 by shipping 8 million devices. Kinect hackers have shown off Minority Report style multitouch control and the Kinect running on Mac OS X. Microsoft said in November that it left the USB connection on the Kinect open, “by design.” Kinect hackers have recently taken the device to new heights. Videos emerged of device owners fully controlling Windows 7 and interactive prototype puppets. Kinect hacking is only at the very early stages but what’s clear is hackers are demonstrating the potential of the technology for use on PCs.

Microsoft blogger Steve Clayton revealed recently that the company is excited by the hundreds of ways people are using Kinect. “The enthusiasm we are seeing in the scientific community – specifically the research and academic communities – around potential applications of Kinect, is exciting to see” wrote Clayton. WinRumors revealed in January that Microsoft is currently preparing an official SDK and Kinect drivers for Windows. Microsoft is set to unveil driver support and an SDK in the coming months and will allow third-party developers to create titles that utilize the Kinect sensor when plugged into a PC. According to sources familiar with the plans, Microsoft will distribute the drivers under the “beta” tag. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, promised Kinect for PC during an interview at CES and confirmed the company would announce official support “in the right time.” It appears the Spring is now the “right time.”

Now I really need to get a Kinect....oh and some time to actually start playing around with it.
